SUV Alliance writes to Lilian Greenwood MP

Today members of the SUV Alliance have written to Lilian Greenwood MP, Minister for Transport, expressing concerns about the impacts of Carspreading on active travel for young people.

Fear of traffic is regularly cited as a barrier to greater uptake of walking, wheeling and cycling, and the trend towards ever-bigger, ever-heavier SUVs will only make this worse. Research from April 2025 found that the likelihood of a child being killed in a collision with an SUV is 82% higher compared to a regular small car.

Some parents may even respond by buying their own SUV in order to keep their children safe - a choice encouraged by SUV adverts, like this one, that play into parental fears.

Our letter calls on Lilian Greenwood to include growing vehicle size and the issues it causes in the upcoming Road Safety Strategy. This is the perfect opportunity for the government to act on this crucial issue and to help create safer, fairer streets for our children.
