Zurich becomes latest city to adopt weight-based parking charges

The Swiss city of Zurich this month voted, by popular referendum, to introduce higher parking charges for heavier cars, making it the latest European city to act against carspreading in this way.

The surcharge will apply to resident parking permits. Details of the exact level of the new surcharge are unclear, however it has previously been reported that petrol and diesel cars will be charged 40 cents (£0.37) per kilo per year, while electric cars will be charged 35 cents.

Other cities with weight-based parking charges include Paris, Grenoble, Lyon, Bordeaux, Aachen, Cologne and Koblenz.
